Learn from My Mistake

Well, here we are… Again! Look for another steam mop. It’s been about 2 years since we bought it. Worked great… Until a couple weeks ago.

So, I have started cleaning our house with vinegar. I don’t like many chemical products and “green products” tend to give me a massive headache. I can usually tell when the other two bathrooms in the house are getting cleaned because I can smell the products and I get a massive headache. Also, when I was working for a housecleaning company–for a whole couple of weeks–after that, I started getting random bumps on my fingers and usually do after using an “green products”. Therefore, I tend to stick to vinegar, water, baking soda, dish soap, lemon juice, and whatever else I can usually find for DIY cleaners.

Well, back to the whole–broke my steam mop trying to “green clean”.

Dirt Devil Easy Steam Mop–had it for about 2 years. Got it so far?

Okay. So, last week, “genius idea” to put vinegar and dish soap in. The steam mop has been leaving nasty streaks on the wood floor since we moved in, in October, and I hate it. Also, the smell of it (yeah, it has a nasty smell) was giving me a headache too. I was hoping it was a dirty clothe or perhaps, it was the water–I don’t know. So, change the clothe and added vinegar and dish soap to the water. Not very much. Just enough to see if it would make a difference. Well, it did really well. Used it for about another week or two.

Then, I got out of the practice. Put it away and didn’t really think about it for a while. Well, last month–or the month before–my husband went to use it. Pulled it out of the closet, pulled it in, and turned it on. Notta! The water warms up. But, nothing happens to the steam head. It doesn’t get hot. It doesn’t steam–nothing! So, it’s toast.

I don’t know if it’s because of the dish soap and vinegar or if it was just  its’ “time”. But, it’s a good cleaner but, for people who are sensitive to smells and such, I wouldn’t recommend it.

So, yeah… That’s what I get to do today. Replace our steam mop. Not a Dirt Devil this time. $60 for 2 years, it isn’t bad. But, I don’t want to have to replace it every couple of years.

Think we’ll be trying out a Shark. Seems to be the most popular among my friends and family via Facebook.

What’s your favorite? Any “it’s busted” stories?
